Early Childhood Resource Center helps child prepare for kindergarten

Jaxson was having a hard time identifying letters, numbers, and shapes. His family needed help to prepare him for kindergarten. Thanks to generous friends like you, they received that help from the free SPARK kindergarten readiness program.

Specially trained parent partners visit SPARK families monthly, equipped with books, activities, supplies, and a structured lesson for the child and parent to do together. With the parent partner’s guidance and support, the family works to get ready for kindergarten.

When Mom went from working the night shift to the day shift, she wanted the morning SPARK lessons to continue. They had helped Jaxson so much with his listening skills and with following directions. So Dad stepped in to take her place. That decision paid off and now both parents noticed the impact of the SPARK visits. They report they frequently see Jaxson applying the things he has learned at home.

Around 43% of the children in Jaxson’s urban neighborhood don’t have the skills and knowledge to succeed in kindergarten. Children who start school behind their peers are four times more likely to drop out of high school. SPARK is putting Jaxson and others on the path to success.
